Internships and Special Education

Miller Park building

I have the pleasure of being able to connect our students in Special Education to community based instruction.  Students from our Life Skills and SEB programs from all of our high schools and Miller Park’s RISE program all have the opportunity to engage in community based instruction through internships.  The students are placed at community businesses spanning across Lee’s Summit.  Students engage in meaningful work receiving on the job training with the business partner, alongside a Job Coach from their home school.  As part of my role I will find different work placements each semester to give students a chance to participate in a variety of job skills, and see what could be a good fit for that individual for post secondary employment.  Through the internships students are able to really connect with the community, build skills specific to the business they are placed, professional skills that will transfer across all environments, and potentially be hired by the participating business.
