Real-World Learning in LSR7: Preparing Students for Life After Graduation
In LSR7, we believe students learn best when they can connect what they’re learning in the classroom to the real world. Through our Diploma Plus program, high school students take on hands-on projects that teach essential skills like teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking. These experiences also help students earn a Market Value Asset (MVA)—a recognition that demonstrates they are ready for college, careers, and life.
Check out some of the amazing real-world learning projects happening in our schools:
Lee’s Summit North High School – Cookie Creations
Culinary Foundations students became bakers and business professionals in one sweet project! Each student created their own cookie recipe and got expert advice from bakery scientists. After testing and perfecting their recipes, students pitched their cookies to the school’s administration. The winning cookies were purchased and served at a staff event—real feedback, real clients, and real success!
Lee’s Summit High School – Sustainable Garden Design
Science of Nature students took learning outside the classroom with a project focused on building sustainable gardens. They studied plant types, garden layouts, and eco-friendly practices. With help from Colonial Gardens and local gardening experts, students even got to plant in real fields. They wrapped up the project by designing their own garden spaces for school, home, or the community.
Summit Technology Academy – Mental Health Forum
Allied Health students made a difference by planning and hosting Mental Health Forums—one for middle school and one for high school students. They researched important topics, created activities to support mental wellness, and received input from professionals at ReDiscover, ProDeo, and other organizations. These forums helped students from across the district learn how to care for their mental health while connecting with others.
